       ...to build an international bridge for computational science

The Silk Road Project at National Astronomical Observatories - Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC - CAS) in close cooperation with The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University (KIAA) brings together computational astrophysics, computer engineering and massively parallel programming. A high-performance supercomputer is being built at NAOC, containing 170 NVIDIA Tesla GPU's (graphical processing units) for general purpose computing (expected peak performance 170 Tflop/s). The project teams include other institutes of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing and Shanghai as well as of Peking University . The computing cluster is built with project partners

Our project is a bridge between China and Germany, Europe, USA ...

Our special partner (the other end of the Silk Road) is the GRACE Project at the Univ. of Heidelberg, Germany .

Main Science Challenges:

How do Black Holes merge in Galactic Nuclei?
How do Galaxies form in the Universe?
How are planetary systems forming and evolving?
How can we design supercomputers which are faster and consume less energy?
How does parallel programming change for accelerated many core computers?
